Our 6th Birthday!

Blow me readers! georgeweahscousin.com is 6 years old!

Here we are just 6 days away from a major final, as yet again the Saints journey becomes even more of a fairy tale! Where have 6 years gone?

As has become as traditional as Saints making at least 5 changes per game, we celebrate our birthdays by awarding the ‘Ali Dia award for services to Southampton’ this year proudly sponsored by Fonte’s Face spiting Nose biters!

You can see the previous recipients of the award here. But who will take this year’s crown? The wait is finally over.

As every year, the jury (myself, Ali Dia, Kleber Chala & Graham Potter) found it extremely difficult. Amongst those nominated were Stuart Taylor for turning up and milling about as the figure head of the ever growing Southampton Goalkeeper farm, Jose Fonte for spurning ‘Legend status’ and heading to the London Stadium to ‘win trophies’ and Juanmi for well being Juanmi. But. When it came down to it there was one man who stood out amongst the rest.

We here at georgeweahscousin.com are delighted to announce that the sixth winner of the ‘Ali Dia award for services to Southampton’ sponsored by Fonte’s face spiting nose biters, for providing the icing on the cake to an already memorable semi final against Liverpool with the perfect screenshot:- It’s Dejan Lovren!

Ever since Lovren’s head decided to part company with his neck and head (pun intended) to Anfield early, the Croat and his performances as part of the ever hapless Liverpool defence have provided us with much amusement. From being nutmegged by Tadic, going to pieces under the abuse at St. Mary’s to this perfectly captured shot of his gormless face realising some of his former Saints team mates might pick up Silverware before him no one can say Dejan isn’t a sport!

Cheers Dejan!

Our 5th Birthday!

Blow me readers! georgeweahscousin.com is 5 years old!

What a five years it has been. Truly one of the greatest periods supporting Saints, and as this site has grown, so has the team (coincidence? Probably).

Much like the club, I set out with a ‘five year plan’, and that was to become the best and most popular Southampton blog on the internet and to sell the site for Millions, leading to eventual early retirement. Bugger. Better make it a ‘ten year plan’.

As has become as traditional as Saints not beating Tottenham or a Portsmouth family playing ‘Guess who’s in ya’ at Christmas, we celebrate our birthdays by awarding the ‘Ali Dia award for services to Southampton’ this year proudly sponsored by Forster Extra Strength Condoms.

You can see the previous recipients of the award here. But who will take this year’s crown? The wait is finally over.

As every year, the jury (myself, Ali Dia, Marco Almeida & Stig Johansen) found it extremely difficult. Amongst those nominated were Juanmi for arriving at the club as a Spanish international, having a tiny dog and struggling to make any impact whatsoever, Gaston Ramirez for his dreadful contribution to cost ratio and Liverpool Football Club for continuously contributing to our yearly improvement. But. When it came down to it there was one man who stood out amongst the rest.

We here at georgeweahscousin.com are delighted to announce that the fifth winner of the ‘Ali Dia award for services to Southampton’ sponsored by Forster Extra Strength Condoms, for selflessly realising that his ‘Jonah’ reputation had coincided with some terrible form for Saints, and sacrificing himself and heading to the place where Saints players go to die:- It’s Steven Caulker!

Steven Caulker's defining game in a Saints shirt....
Steven Caulker’s defining game in a Saints shirt….

Saints form Post-Caulker:- P 5 W 4 D 1 L 0 F 7 A 0 PTS 13

Cheers Steve!

Our 4th Birthday!

Blow me readers! georgeweahscousin.com is four years old!

This site has successfully made the transition from a League One site with fewer readers but plucky enjoyable output to Premier League site with far more readers from much further reaches!

As has become as traditional as Saints not trying in the FA Cup, we celebrate this occasion with the awarding of the ‘Ali Dia award for services to Southampton’ sponsored this year by New Squeezy Cheesy Peas.

This is an award unlike any other. It is not awarded to the best player or the longest serving but anyone who has done something that has caught our eye in their duty as a Saints. The first year it was awarded to Oscar Gobern and in 2013 the prize was taken by Billy Sharp  before Guly got the gong last year but who would add their name to this illustrious list?

The jury (Myself, Ali Dia, Imants Bleidelis and Scott Marshall) found it extremely difficult, as it is every year. When it came down to it though only one man really warranted this award based on the last 12 months.

We here at georgeweahscousin.com are delighted to announce that the fourth winner of the ‘Ali Dia award for services to Southampton’ sponsored by New Squeezy Cheesy Peas, for coming out of a Summer where he was drenched in shit smelling of roses and getting £20 million for Dejan Lovren in the process:- Les Reed!

Our 3rd Birthday!

Blow me readers! georgeweahscousin.com is three years old!

This site has successfully made the transition from a League One site with fewer readers but plucky enjoyable output to Premier League site with far more readers (most of which have only just got interested) and far more commercially pleasing output.

As has become as traditional as Saints not trying in the FA Cup, we celebrate this occasion with the awarding of the ‘Ali Dia award for services to Southampton’ sponsored by Orgran Egg Substitute.

This is an award unlike any other. It is not awarded to the best player or the longest serving but anyone who has done something that has caught our eye in their duty as a Saints. The first year it was awarded to Oscar Gobern and last year the prize was taken by Billy Sharp but who would add their name to this illustrious list?

The jury (Myself, Ali Dia, Alaeddine Yahia and Kleber Chala) found it extremely difficult this year. It almost went to Dani Osvaldo, who in just six months managed to be fined and banned for kicking a Newcastle coach, have several injuries, be fined and banished for attacking Jose Fonte and score a spectacular goal against Manchester City (thanks to Adam Priestly for the summary). When it came to it though only one man really warranted this award based on the last 12 months.

We here at georgeweahscousin.com are delighted to announce that the third winner of the ‘Ali Dia award for services to Southampton’ sponsored by Orgran Egg Substitute, for showing the level of testicular fortitude that only a maverick samba assassin can is:- Guly do Prado for his penalty against Yeovil Town.

In what looks to be Guly’s last season at Saints it has to be said that he has suffered some unnecessary criticism at times, yet still loves the club and has been a great servant to it. To ask Jay Rodriguez for the ball and to step up in front of the Northam and take that penalty took nuts. Congratulations Guly!

Thank you to everyone who has read this blog over the last year!

Our 2nd Birthday!

Blow me readers! georgeweahscousin.com is two years old!

In the same time as it has taken me to write 157 posts of inane drivel, viewed over 170,000 times, Saint have been promoted twice and changed managers. The first game after the birth of this site was a goalless draw away at Hartlepool and it turns two on the back of a 3-1 victory over the champions of England!

For those of you that remember, I celebrated last year’s first birthday with the inaugural ‘Ali Dia award for services to Southampton’ to midfielder Oscar Gobern, and this year is no exception. This award is presented to someone who has done something that has caught the eye in a Saints shirt.

After hours of discussion amongst the jury (myself, Ali Dia, Federico Arias and Agustin Delgado) we are delighted to announce that this year winner is:- Billy Sharp.

Sharp was considered a worthy winner of this award after shushing our poor relations down the road at St. Mary’s at the back end of last season. Congratulations Billy!

Billy Sharp Shush
Shhhhhhharp!

Thanks to everyone who has read the blog over the last year, and here is to another!

Our 1st Birthday!

Blow me readers! Today marks the first anniversary of this site, and I just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who has spent their time reading the posts and to all those who have commented on it and given me feedback.

It really has been far more successful than I ever could have hoped for and has opened up some interesting opportunites for me.

To celebrate this momentous occasion I can now announce the winner of the inaugural georgeweahscousin.com “Ali Dia Services to Southampton” Award sponsored by Vanish stain remover which goes to Oscer Gobern for his enthusiastic tackle against Bournemouth on 12th March 2011.

I spoke to George Weah himself on the phone to ask if he would present the award, but strangely he had no knowledge of either Ali Dia or this site and has asked me not to call again.

I am sure we can all agree that Oscar is a very worthy winner.

Thanks again for reading, and here’s to another great year as a Saints fan!

Cheers,

Chris
