Southampton scored a goal against Crystal Palace, and what a goal it was.
Sadio Mane’s chipped effort over a stranded Julian Speroni last night, caused a collective sigh of relief that could have been heard beyond the borders of Hampshire, as Saints finally converted their dominant play into both an end product and three deserved points.
They made hard work of it, of course they did, but the elation that was met with the 82nd minute winner was worth it in the end.
Saints were in danger of their season imploding on them and not getting the grand finale it has thus far merited, but there was a sense that the Senegalese had put the poor form to bed when he pounced on James Ward-Prowse’s spilled shot and chipped the ball home.
